Feasibility of installing roof-mounted boosting burner in an end-port furnace




This study was intended to analyse the feasibility of installation of a roof mounted burner in a regenerative end-port furnace.


First the current furnace was defined by measuring temperatures, flue gas composition. The data collection was achieved by installing a furnace analysing system (ggFAS), which analysed the furnace energy and mass balances in this case every 45s. Based on the data the base case simulation was performed and defined as basis for all variations.

Several position of the roof mounted burners were simulated, all location were chosen that the burner are not toughing open glass melt, but only the batch blanket. Both Oxy-Fuel and Air-Fuel burners were simulated.

Special attention was paid to the simulation of both the combustion, batch and the glassmelt to analyse effects on emissions, glass quality and maximum pull.


Only two arrangement of roof mounted burners were found to be usefull. Production increases of up to 11% were calculated. Positive effects like energy consumption reduction or emission reduction were not observed. Contrary the NOx formation was found to be increased, if Oxygen was used as oxidizer.
