Formal entrance requirements
A candidate should have a first degree (Bachelor of Science or Engineering) in an engineering discipline, such as Metallurgy, or Materials Engineering, awarded by an internationally recognised university-level institution. Candidates should have also performed above average in their undergraduate studies and should be able to speak and write fluently in German (DSH-level).

General description of the programme
This programme focuses on all disciplines within Metallurgical Engineering and Material Science, represented by twelve parallel study majors:


Metallic Materials
Physical Metallurgy, Material Science of Steels, Material Science of Non-ferrous Metals


Mineral Materials
Material Science of Mineral Materials, Glass Technology, Ceramics Technology, Inorganic Building Materials


Process Technology
Ferrous Process Metallurgy, Non-ferrous Process Metallurgy, Casting Technology, Metal Forming, Process and Plant Engineering.
The knowledge obtained from ongoing research at the RWTH flows directly into lectures, seminars, and workshops, ensuring an up-to-date and innovative curriculum.


Structure of the programme
At the beginning of the programme, students will choose one of the majors offered as their individual study focus. The theoretical foundation is laid by six mandatory basic courses. The programme is complemented by a compulsory optional subject selected from an extended catalogue published by the faculty at the beginning of each study year.

Career prospects
Metallurgical engineers work in a multitude of areas within industry, including research and development, design, production planning, sales and distribution, quality management and organisation. In granting the M.Sc. degree, the programme gives the graduate a degree which is recognised around the world.
